What Do You Do When Everything Goes Sideways as an Academic Advisor? When an Advisor Needs an Advisor

Keywords:

Health and Wellbeing

Abstract:

Academic advisors are often called upon to serve as teachers, problem-solvers, counselors, cheerleaders, and sources of stability for students navigating increasingly complex personal and academic challenges. These responsibilities, when layered with advisors’ own personal stressors, can become overwhelming. This session invites participants to reflect on the realities of advising work and the emotional labor inherent in the role. Through guided discussion, data-informed insights, and interactive activities, attendees will explore strategies for managing stress, accessing institutional and personal resources, and practicing self-care while maintaining professional effectiveness. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical tools and a renewed understanding that caring for themselves is essential to caring effectively for students.
