The Division of Undergraduate Studies is one of the oldest and most comprehensive programs of its kind in American higher education. DUS traces its origins to the 1930s when Penn State faculty began conducting pioneering research on student development. The earliest predecessor of DUS, the Division of Intermediate Registration (DIR), was created in 1948 to help meet the academic needs of returning World War II veterans. In 1956, DIR was replaced by the Division of Counseling (DOC). As part of its work, the DOC helped students better understand their personal characteristics and how these characteristics related to the new educational environment they were entering.
In 1973, after a three-year study, the University Faculty Senate recommended the creation of DUS to improve enrollment and advising programs for students as they developed their academic plans and to create a University-wide academic information and advising system. On October 1, 1973, Penn State's Board of Trustees established the Division of Undergraduate Studies.
When founded, DUS enrolled approximately 400 students. Now, with over 7,000 students at twenty campuses, DUS is Penn State's largest unit of enrollment for entering baccalaureate students.
