Tipping Points in Academic Advising: How Small Interactions Create Big Change

Keywords:

Student Success Equity, Respect, and Belonging Student Persistence, Retention and Academic Skills

Abstract:

Academic advisors often underestimate the long-term impact of seemingly small interactions with students. Drawing upon the concept of “tipping points,” this presentation explores how brief moments of connection, encouragement, intervention, and support can significantly influence student belonging, persistence, confidence, and academic success. Through reflective discussion and practical examples, participants will examine how advising conversations can shape student trajectories during periods of transition, uncertainty, and challenge. The session will connect developmental advising, student belonging, and relationship-centered practice to the broader role advisors play in helping students navigate higher education. Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on the cumulative influence of everyday advising interactions and identify strategies for creating meaningful moments that support student growth, resilience, and persistence.
