Abstract:
As advisors, it is our job to help students carve a path to reach their goals. However, sometimes we also have to do the more painful work of helping students make new goals when the original plans don’t work out. It’s a balancing act between being realistic and empathetic with the student. In the first advising session, we get to be aspirational with the student; within reason, they can be any major they want. However, as students progress, it becomes clear for some that the original goal is no longer practical or achievable. In many cases, a student’s dreams and a student’s talents do not align. How do we help students map out a new journey while also respecting the grief the student may feel for the unrealized goals?
