Career Development Net for First Generation Students and Students of Color

Keywords:

Student Success Career Advising Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice

Abstract:

First-generation and students of color often face systemic barriers in higher education, leading to higher dropout rates, particularly in STEM fields (e.g. Dawn et al., 2022). Advisors may unintentionally perpetuate lower expectations, reinforcing systemic inequities (e.g. Nix et al., 2021; Sarcedo, Seriki & McDonald, 2022). To better serves these students, a more tangible, goal-oriented, and systemic approach has been found effective. This presentation will focus on utilizing O*NET (highly used career information guides) as a guide for a clearer career roadmap with essential skills and planning, while collaborating with campus career services to build a supportive network to motivate underserved students (Srinivas & Smalling, 2024). The presenter will exemplify a strength-based approach, teaching healthy and effective daily routines, enhancing self-efficacy, and utilizing a career development model (e.g. Conkel-Ziebell et al., 2019; Pasha et al., 2020).
