Abstract:
The Relational and Conceptual components of the NACADA academic advising core competencies describe a powerful set of transferable skills that enable advisors to offer support in a variety of domains in their lives. In this presentation, we will review relevant data and discuss how trauma informed advising, change theory, and interpersonal skills can be effectively utilized by academic advisors to support not only their students, but also their colleagues and themselves through times of crisis. This highly interactive session includes a research informed discussion of how crises impact us physically and emotionally, at work, in the classroom, and in other functional arenas. Through narrative and reflection, we will generate recommendations for utilizing advising skills to be a more supportive presence for the most important people in our lives: our students, our friends, and ourselves.
