International Education Week

Did you know that Penn State recognizes students from more than 100 countries around the world? Or that we are ranked 19th nationally for the number of students studying abroad? Help Penn State celebrate our global community by taking part in International Education Week. International Education Week is a world-wide, federally recognized week of celebrating international education and exchange. Take the time to broaden your perspective, and learn about a culture different than your own. Events will be hosted by colleges, campuses, units, and centers all around Penn State during the week of October 22 – 27th, so be sure to check them out!

How to get started with Study Abroad

Are you interested in completing a portion of your education while abroad? Need more information? The Global - Penn State website is a great place to start. You will find information for students, parents and families as well as a page with details for each of the campuses. Concerned about the costs associated with study abroad? Engage in Grange
University Park

This week during International Education Week, we have two activities for you to engage in to help show the diversity and intercultural experience of students in the Division of Undergraduate Studies and at Penn State. The first activity is to add a pin to the map in the lobby by the elevator to show where you are from, where you have lived or visited, and/or where you would like to visit. The second activity is to add a post-it note on the map by the fireplace to share an experience that helped shape your perspective on global citizenship, diversity or international education. 

Global Languages Week

Cultivating the Ethical Imagination
Harrisburg

As part of the Penn State Harrisburg Center for Holocaust and Jewish Studies speaker series, Hannah Spector, assistant professor of education in the School of Behavioral Sciences and Education, will present "Cultivating the Ethical Imagination: Perspectives from Three Jewish Intellectuals," from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in C213 Olmsted Building.  Full story

The Many Faces of Intercultural Dialogue

“The Many Faces of Intercultural Dialogue” will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, in the Franklin Atrium, Pattee Library. Intensive English Communication Program international students and their Penn State student partners will share posters about what they have learned about each other and their respective cultures during their conversation partner program. The event will also serve as a venue for the English for Professional Purposes Intercultural Center and Global Connections to present the many resources and opportunities available for the University and the community.   Full story

College Corner - Earth and Mineral Sciences

Want the opportunity to make a face-to-face connection with a representative from each of the colleges at University Park while asking questions and finding out about the majors, minors, and special programs your college has to offer? Come to the College Corner, held every Wednesday from 1–4 p.m. in the Grange Building Lobby. Each week, a different college will have a representative present to answer general questions and provide information about their college. Note that this time is not expected to be for individual advising, but is intended for general information gathering.

This week's representative is from the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

Interested in learning more about a major in Engineering or Earth and Mineral Sciences? Many majors in these colleges are offering information sessions throughout the semester. Go to those that interest you, hear from students and faculty, find out about what you'd study in the major and what kinds of career opportunities there are, and tour the facilities.

NASA Scholarship Opportunities for Undergraduates
University Park

Apply to earn a $500 scholarship and a one-year research experience as part of the NASA Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium. This program offers students the opportunity to collaborate with a research team, learn the language of research and use high-tech equipment. You will learn to work safely and efficiently in the lab. Research activities may include attending lab meetings, preparing research posters and collecting data. You may also experience professional conferences and field work. Students often are assigned their own research project or work closely with a graduate student to collect important data for the lab.

The application cycle closes on November 1, 2017. Students will participate in the program for the spring and fall 2018 semesters.

Join the New Student Orientation O-Team

Interested in helping join the Class of 2022 to Penn State? Join the Orientation Team! We are seeking diverse, dedicated, enthusiastic, resourceful, and motivated students to join our 2018 Orientation Team (OTeam).  New Student Orientation (NSO) begins the transition to Penn State and the OTeam makes the difference for new students and their families. Members of the OTeam will serve as group facilitators, resource persons, role models, and ambassadors for Penn State during NSO. Group Advising Sessions

DUS will be holding Group Advising Sessions throughout the fall semester as a way to discuss popular advising topics with groups of students. These sessions are open to all DUS students and will help you to learn more about the topic and to ask questions in a friendly, open environment. All sessions are held in the Grange Building Lobby.

Winter Study Abroad Program in Australia

Study abroad in Sydney, Australia during winter break (Dec 26–Jan 7). PSU's ART 299: Social and Cultural Explorations in the Visual Arts (3 credits) is open to all University Park students.  This embedded program will immerse students in a learning environment that presents new ways of thinking about culture and social issues as expressed through visual arts.  Students will tour Sydney's public art, participate in creative workshops with local artists, tour the Sydney Opera House and attend a performance, and visit a number of museums and galleries.
