News:
Why go to office hours, and how to do it

Now is the time to start visiting your instructors during their office hours. What if you don’t know what to say? Here are some ideas. What if you’re not having a problem in the class? Even better reason to go! Don’t be afraid to just introduce yourself, show you care, and make a connection.  What’s the etiquette? Here are some tips, and here’s some advice for navigating the “hidden rules” of office hours. Remember, instructors are people too, and their office hours are times specifically set aside for YOU to support your learning.

How do I know when to schedule?

September is a great time to ask yourself that question. Most DUS students will schedule in late October to early November with the exception of priority (early) registration for some (veterans, athletesSchreyer Scholars, and students with disabilities).

How to determine your registration date:

1) Typically students with more credits register first; registration dates are determined by adding your total credits earned to the credits on your current schedule.

2) There are two way to look up your date to register: Registration Timetable and in LionPATH, look at your Student Center for Enrollment Dates.

3) You can begin enrolling in classes at 12:01 a.m. on your day to schedule.

Events and Announcements:
Study Smarter, Not Harder
University Park

Would you like to learn how to study more effectively in less time? Study Smarter, Not Harder is an interactive workshop that 99% of students who previously attended would recommend to a friend. Study Smarter, Not Harder will be held Wednesday, September 26 at 6:00 p.m. in 110 Wartik Lab. You’ll learn how to create good learning habits, effective strategies for processing information, how to break down course material into manageable concepts, and the most important factors in successful learning.

Present at the Student Engagement Expo
University Park

The Student Engagement Network (SEN) is hosting the second annual Student Engagement Expo on Wed., Oct. 17, 2018, in the HUB-Robeson Center at University Park! You can be a part of the event in one of two ways:

  • Show the impact of your engagement experience in the form of a poster
  • Share your engagement experience story as a lightning round presenter

Poster Session

The poster session will be held in Art Alley (next to the Engagement Space) from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. During this time, 1-2 students will need to be present at their poster to discuss their engagement experience with event attendees. Posters of all engagement types (i.e. research findings, service learning trips, capstone projects, etc.) are welcome. Students who participate will be asked and encouraged to showcase their work the following morning (9:00 - 10:00 a.m.) at the Student Engagement Summit.

Lightning Round Presentations

Lightning round presentations will take place in Freeman Auditorium from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. They are designed to be similar to TED talks—quick, engaging, and lasting no more than five minutes. Students may present individually or as part of a group, and will speak to how their engagement experience has impacted their life and academic career. Selected presenters will be required to put together their own presentation and participate in both an information and practice session.

To learn more about the event and submit a proposal, visit engage.psu.edu/events/expo. The deadline to submit a proposal is Wed., Sep. 26. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us directly at engage@psu.edu.
