What are some of the ways in which you support first gen college students?

I try to read what I can about first gen students' experiences. Although I am not the first in my family to go to college, reading helps educate me on how I can better support different students' unique needs.

What are some of the challenges that you see first-gen students face? How do they overcome those challenges (or manage the challenge if it cannot be overcome)?

First gen students may be a little less familiar with opportunities or processes in college, since other students may have heard about those opportunities and processes previously from their parents. For example, how and when can I get an internship? How do I establish relationships with professors? What exactly is the difference between a major and a minor? First gen students (and really all students) should not be afraid to ask questions or seek clarification. Meeting regularly with academic advisers can help students better understand such topics.

Understanding that there are multiple paths people can take through life, some of which do not involve college, gives first gen students a broader view and a stronger sense of their place in the world.

What advice would you give to first gen students?

Pushing through discomfort and being self-sufficient helps students get through challenging situations. However, it is also important to regularly seek help or guidance from professors and advisers.
