I came to University Park to study comparative literature in 1997.

A college campus is the best of all possible worlds. Students and faculty learn, discuss, do research together. Students and advisers reflect on classes and fields of learning. We draw connections between classes, between experiences in- and outside the classroom. We plan and discuss significant encounters. Is there anywhere else you would rather be?

If I could only read one book, I would be very unhappy. I like words. They create cadence in sentences, rhythm in poetry, events in novels and plays. Above all, I love stories, those wonderful inventions that are as important to us as our opposable thumbs.

My life changing experience happened during my college years in a conflict resolution workshop, when I was asked to walk an hour in someone else’s shoes, as it were. I could have been a sociology major, or studied social anthropology.

I am currently thinking about matters inter- and cross-cultural.
