Learning Outcomes and Careers

Each Bachelor of Philosophy student will gain a unique set of knowledge and skills that will prepare them for career paths of their choosing. The self-reflection needed to create an individualized major provides all B.Phil. students with greater confidence in their intellectual and professional identities. Moreover, the self-discipline and open-mindedness cultivated by designing a major provides students with tools to pursue new goals and face unexpected challenges in the future.

The capstone project is the centerpiece of any B.Phil. degree. Completing the capstone will provide students with a depth of knowledge around a unique and focused issue, topic, or question. This may include targeted knowledge or skills that employers seek in the student’s industry of interest. Also, in undertaking the capstone, all students learn research, organizational, and project development skills that will prepare them for success in any field.

B.Phil. graduates have pursued masters, doctoral, and professional degrees in various fields, such as business, public policy, education, sociology, and chemistry. They have attended graduate school at institutions such as UC Berkeley, Harvard, Michigan State, Penn State, University of Arizona, Johns Hopkins, University of Georgia, University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern, and Tufts.

Alumni work in many different professions, including as business executives, consultants, professors, therapists, life coaches, marketing managers, interpreters, pastors, and much more. They work in various organizational settings, from global corporations like Nike to government agencies like the U.S. Forest Service to nonprofits like the Urban Sustainability Directors Network.
