Mission and Values

The Bachelor Philosophy program’s mission is to enable Penn State undergraduate students, in partnership with a faculty mentor, to pursue a unique, individualized course of study that existing programs cannot accommodate and to undertake in-depth scholarship within their chosen area of interest.

The B.Phil. program values:

Intellectual curiosity and rigor – Students have the opportunity to pursue their unique interests. We promote and foster curiosity and being open to considering and exploring new ideas. Ultimately, students must develop and complete a meaningful program of study that builds towards a capstone project which engages deeply with a sharply focused question or issue. Clearly articulating the purpose behind the program and defending the capstone requires rigorous scholarly work. Such work includes developing an understanding of how an area of study is relevant to others and can make a positive impact.

Integrative studies – Students have the opportunity to take courses from across the entire University. The B.Phil. program recognizes that the boundaries of places, people, and concepts are rich habitats for the creation of new perspectives and ideas. We welcome students who realize that solutions to the complex issues and problems of both ancient and modern societies rest upon the integration of the arts, sciences, humanities, and applied disciplines.

Mentorship and community – Seeking appropriate help, guidance, and advice are necessary for success in the B.Phil program. We foster the intellectual and professional growth of students through close, one-on-one mentorship and advising. Faculty engaged with the program place great value on intellectual engagement with students over multiple semesters of shared learning. Also, we believe B.Phil. students learn and grow from each other. Thus, the program promotes opportunities for students to engage in mutual support and gain a sense of community.
