Wearing Two Hats: Online Faculty Advising When Graduate Students Are At Academic Risk

Keywords:

Student Persistence, Retention and Academic Skills Advising Special Populations Faculty and Peer Advising/Mentoring

Abstract:

When students are assigned advisers who are faculty within their graduate programs, advising relationships and approaches may look different than that of a full-time academic advisor. This session, presented by the program coordinator and co-coordinator of an online master’s program, will unpack the presenters’ experiences in advising at-risk online graduate students in their program. The presenters will share strategies to enhance student persistence that are implemented by them as advisors, as well as how program structure plays a unique role in student persistence. Online student needs and research will also be discussed so that attendees can consider places where strategies presented should be adapted for their own institutions and roles based upon the student populations with which they work.
