The Real Advisors of Student Success: Careers with Staying Power

Keywords:

Training and Development History of Advising/Higher Education

Abstract:

Behind the gates of our institutions, academic advising practitioners serve as partners in student success.  We balance two worlds on campus - (1) serving as student advocates and (2) interpreters of academic practices and protocols.  Our roles are ever-changing as our profession transforms.  It enters new eras, best to serve our advisees and the higher educational landscape.  It can lead to complex challenges and a loss of personnel.  The need to rebuild and strengthen the field allows for greater transparency between staff, administrators, and executive leadership in sharing the next iteration.  The reality is that we need to engage in an exchange of ideas. We must become the architects to help shape the future of academic advising. Join a pop-cultural journey to learn how to sustainably “whoop it up” and avoid flipping tables.
