Abstract:

Academic advising is a great opportunity to engage students in conversations that foster their sense of belonging to the institution.

To practice new ways to connect with your advisees, you will learn the following: 1) Read your students’ profile; 2) Ask questions to your advisees and allow them to make choices through Motivational Interviewing (MI); 3) Provide a reliable schedule your students can access for appointments; 4) Offer regular walk-in advising hours; 5) Add notes for each advising session on the institutions’ advising CRM system like Navigate360; 6)Collect student data to identify student outreach through campaigns; 7) Join student socials on campus.

This session will provide innovative practices and tools that advisors can use to engage with students and build their sense of belonging to their institution. This presentation will include a handout that all attendees can use as they continue their work at their institution.
