Description of the major
The study of nutrition incorporates human biology and biochemistry to understand how the body utilizes nutrients and related substances for optimal health. Students also gain an understanding of how nutrition and lifestyle relate to public health issues and the development of chronic and acute diseases.
The Dietetics option of the Nutritional Sciences major is an accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at Penn State.
The option provides a strong foundation in science, foods, and nutrition with a diverse curriculum to meet the accreditation standards set by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Students who enter this option have the long-term goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian (RD). The RD professional designation qualifies an individual as a food and nutrition expert to address today's complex issues surrounding foods and nutrition.
