Students should be part of an intellectual community. The best part of my job is helping them find an intellectual community to join.

The most unusual thing in my office is an old Soviet poster. I love old Soviet posters for several reasons. If you come to my office, you can ask me why.

I am afraid of creeping philistinism.

To satisfy my sweet tooth, I enjoy cookies, including chocolate chip cookies, shortbread cookies, lime cornmeal cookies, white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies, snickerdoodles, ginger snaps, Russian tea cakes, and butter cookies. I am willing to try any cookie that you bring to my office. I really like cookies.

My most transformative educational experience was reading Evans-Pritchard's Witchcraft, Oracles, and Magic among the Azande in college. What is yours?

I love to read books by Iain M. Banks and Clifford Geertz.
