Looking for some ways to make registration work better for you? Check out these helpful tips that will make scheduling your courses a whole lot easier.
When Can You Register?
In eLion, click on Registration Calendar (under Schedule) to see the first date you can register for next-semester courses.
You can also see this date in a degree audit or in the Registration Timetable. On that day, you can access the Registration application in eLion at 12:01 a.m. The system closes down at 3:00 a.m. and is up again at 7:00 a.m.
Remember, this is the first day you can register, not the last. Keep trying! You can keep changing your schedule until the drop/add deadline.
Want to schedule a course but it's full? Try these strategies to get access to the course you're after!
When a course is cross-listed, as indicated in the University Bulletin course description (e.g., WMNST 008 and PHIL 008), spaces are set aside in multiple departments (in this example, the women's studies department and the philosophy department). If there are no spaces left in one of the courses, try the cross-listed course(s).
If a Controls link appears in the Notes column in in the Schedule of Courses as having course controls, click on the link to find out who can schedule the course. If you're unable to schedule a controlled course, call the department to ask what you might do to schedule it. Department phone numbers and locations are listed in the Schedule of Courses and in the Penn State Department Directory.
If you get an error message when you enter all your course numbers in the eLion Registration application, re-enter the six-digit schedule number for the course you didn't get to find out why you couldn't schedule it.
If you're having issues with eLion, please contact the AIS Help Desk for assistance.
Looking for a Certain Kind of Course?
You can use the Additional Search Criteria in the Schedule of Courses to find courses sorted by:
- Number of credits (e.g. 2 credit courses)
- Day(s) of the week
- First-Year Seminar
- General Education courses in specific categories (Arts, Humanities, etc.)
- Instructor last name
- International Cultures, US Cultures and/or Other Cultures
- Open sections only
- Web courses
- Writing-intensive (Writing Across the Curriculum)
Dropping and Adding
When revising your schedule, you might want to drop a course/section only if you can be sure that it is possible to add an alternative course/section. Go ahead! On eLion, the simultaneous request for drop and add is an all-or-nothing activity. Your record isn't changed unless both actions occur.
All students may adjust their schedules during Course Drop and Add Periods in every semester/session. Students who have late–drop credits remaining may also drop courses beyond the regular deadline but should first discuss circumstances and options with an academic adviser and follow the Late Drop Checklist.
If you have other questions about course registration, please contact the Registrar's Office.
