I was raised in Glendora, California, Pride of the Foothills, a suburb of Los Angeles nestled at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena of Rose Bowl/Parade fame. My adopted hometown is Hancock, New Hampshire. It's a village of 1,654 with a bandstand on the common and Paul Revere's bell in the church steeple. Its where I raised my children and watched them learn to swim in the summer and ice skate in the winter all in/on the same pond. We love to go back the third weekend every August to celebrate Old Home Days, which is a celebration of the village and all who have ever called Hancock home.
I studied political science at the University of La Verne in California while working at the Glendora Police Department during my undergraduate years. After receiving my bachelor's degree, I attended University of the Pacific's School of Law in Sacramento. After all my preparation and anticipation, law school was not what I thought it was going to be, and I did not return after the first year. I was devastated but regrouped and enrolled in a master's program in Counseling at the University of California, Fullerton. I completed my master's degree with a yearlong internship working at a non-profit with court-referred domestic violence offenders and then settled into work as a marriage, family, child counselor in private practice.
When my husband had the opportunity to move to NH for his career, we decided to go. I feel fortunate to have had many years at home with my three children (hardest job ever) and to do a wide variety of volunteer work. My volunteer work assisting high school juniors with their college/career planning led me to the First-Year Testing, Consulting, and Advising Program at Penn State. I enjoy talking with students and helping them to think about and explore their educational interests and goals, and I enjoy being an adviser during a bit of their journey.
My favorite thing to do at home is quilting. I learned in NH and took to it immediately. It is creative and therapeutic. I also enjoy reading, traveling, gardening, watching old movies, and being with my family.
