Brown Earns 2012 Staff Diversity Recognition Award

During annual ceremonies on April 3, Penn States Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) awarded the 2012 Staff Diversity Recognition Award to academic adviser Laura Brown in recognition of her commitment to diversity efforts, inspirational support of multicultural student needs, and special programming for diverse student populations.
Brown, a senior undergraduate studies adviser in the Division of Undergraduate Studies, was particularly honored for thoughtfully and consistently reaching out to students of all backgrounds and empowering them by listening, encouraging discussion, and skillfully guiding them toward helpful resources.
According to her nominator, Brown always makes time to help students referred to her and they leave [Lauras] office with a renewed energy, positive and hopeful self assessment, and a clear sense of direction.
Highlighted were instances during numerous student programs that Brown has coordinated, including excursions to the Washington D.C. Newseum and presentations to multicultural student groups, when she masterfully wove questions that led students to think about their own stand on social justice and civic engagement.
Additionally Brown was recognized for enthusiastically participating as an MRC special programs panelist, contributing her expertise as an academic adviser and voicing the importance of empowering students to succeed.
Terrell Jones, Penn States Vice Provost for Educational Equity, presented this years Diversity Recognition awards to selected students who demonstrated leadership and academic excellence, as well as to staff and faculty members who promoted multiculturalism and demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of students. The MRC is a unit that provides individual counseling and educational services for undergraduate multicultural students at University Park with the goal of helping students succeed and graduate from Penn State.
